where it started

I used to describe my anxiety like some kind of shadow or ghost I locked up in a room. It's locked up because I don't want to have to deal with it. It's easier to ignore stuff when you can't see or hear it. When I can't ignore it anymore, it feels like the ghost/shadow is screaming through the door and is trying to break through.

This is the feeling i tried to draw.

The sketch on the right is the first sketch I made in this process.

Turns out, it's fricking hard to draw screaming faces if you have no idea how to draw a normal face, let alone a screaming one from a sideview.

The faces I drew in the previous sketch are way too small to add details, so I made them a little bigger.

I sketched out the faces with a pencil and used a fine-liner afterwards to get a clearer result.

I really liked the fading out part, so I tried to use that throughout the rest of the drawings!

For this one I sketched out a possible other side of the door. I thought about what would make it very clear that I'm trying to keep the shadows on the other side. I immediately got a visual of a chair that clamps the door handle and a little girl huddled against it.

I also drew one screaming face instead of two. I did that in the first place because I was lazy, and didn't feel like drawing more heads, but ended up liking this more than the initial two.

Powerpoint?

I really liked the idea I had before, but I didn't know what more I wanted to do with it. it had been a while since I made something in PowerPoint, so I thought I'd come back to it.

A big difference between the sketch and this one, is that I used color. I chose dark purple because I feel like it represents the feeling that comes with being anxious; shivering from the 'cold' and being sweaty from feeling hot at the same time. Feeling like it's all dark, when it's not.

I started with using a pretty light brown color for the face, but I think it would have been better if I used grey or purple for it. I think it stands out too much when I want the whole piece to be chaotic and difficult to see what is what.

unfortunatly i lost the pp file i made this drawing in, so i can't change the original drawing.

after I made the purple drawing, I decided to search for more reference pictures. Those are the ones you see on the left.

when I was looking for the references, I noticed that I like the black and white images more than the ones with color.

I really liked the way the faces (1,2,5 and 7) look like they are coming out of the darkness.

I chose reference number 4 as my main reference because it's a very clear image of what I'm trying to draw.

Time for a sketch!

This is the first sketch I made. I started off by drawing the main shapes of the face on the original picture. These main shapes are the circle for the head, the chin, the neck and the placement of the facial features. This way I could spend more time on the actual drawing/animation instead of only on the sketch. After I had the general outlines, I went over the original sketch and made the lines thicker and changed the shape of some of the features like the eyes and ears.
